Find an Iowa Arrest and Verify the Criminal Case Result

Iowa does not place every arrest, jail booking and criminal case in one public database. Recent custody begins with the county sheriff, while the filed charge and final outcome appear in the state court docket.

Use this guide to identify the correct county, search jail and court records, order a $15 DCI history, request police reports, confirm warrants and bond, correct inaccurate data and pursue an eligible expungement.

An Iowa arrest is not proof of guilt. A jail or DCI record can show that an agency reported an arrest. It does not prove that the prosecutor filed the same charge or that the case ended in conviction.

Start with the right record

One Iowa arrest can create four separate public records

COUNTY SHERIFF OR JAIL Current booking record

May show custody, booking date, charges received by the jail, bond, holds, housing and release.

Best for answering: Is the person in jail now?
POLICE OR SHERIFF Incident or arrest report

Contains the agency narrative, probable-cause information and releasable investigative material.

Best for answering: What did officers report?
IOWA JUDICIAL BRANCH Criminal court docket

Shows the formal case, filed charges, hearings, warrants, disposition, judgment and sentence.

Best for answering: How did the case end?
IOWA DCI State criminal history

Combines reportable Iowa arrest data, court dispositions and corrections custody information.

It does not include other states or federal cases.
Most reliable search order: Find the county booking, identify the arresting agency, search Iowa Courts Online, obtain the disposition and use DCI when a statewide Iowa history is needed.

County booking workflow

Search an Iowa county jail record step by step

Start with the surname A last-name-only search helps avoid missed results caused by middle names, shortened first names or spelling differences.
Add the first name gradually Use the legal first name only when a common surname produces too many results.
Try aliases and former names Test a maiden name, former surname, hyphenated name or suffix when the first search fails.
Allow intake time Identification, medical screening, property inventory, fingerprinting and data entry can delay a new booking.
Open every plausible match Do not assume that the first person with the same name is the correct person.
Compare birth date or age Use the strongest identity field the jail makes public.
Record all official numbers Save the booking number, jail ID, arrest number, case number and agency report number.
Read every charge separately One booking can include several cases, warrants, holds or release conditions.
Identify the arresting agency This is the agency to contact for the incident or arrest report.
Search Iowa Courts Online Use the court docket to verify what was formally filed and how the case ended.

Understand common Iowa jail fields

A jail field is not the same as a final court finding
Field What it identifies What it does not prove Next action
Booking number One jail-admission or custody event. The final criminal outcome. Use it for jail questions and records requests.
Inmate or jail ID The person inside that county detention system. Guilt or conviction. Use it for mail, deposits and visitation.
Arrest date When legal custody was recorded. When the alleged conduct occurred. Compare it with the incident report.
Booking date When the jail processed the admission. When the prosecutor filed charges. Use it to distinguish multiple arrests.
Arresting agency The police, sheriff or state agency connected to the arrest. The jail created the investigative report. Request the report from the listed agency.
Booking charge An allegation entered during arrest or intake. What the county attorney ultimately prosecuted. Read the court charging document.
Bond A release amount or condition connected to a case. Payment clears every charge or hold. Confirm all cases before paying.
Hold or detainer Another court or agency may control release. The local bond is sufficient. Ask which agency owns the hold.
Release date When that custody event ended. Dismissal, acquittal or innocence. Search the final court disposition.
Mugshot A photograph created during intake. Identity by itself or criminal guilt. Match official numbers and birth information.
Identity safeguard

Verify the correct person before using an Iowa record

Full first and last name match
Middle name, suffix or alias is consistent
Date of birth or age matches
Arrest date matches the known event
County matches the place of arrest
Arresting agency matches the location
Booking number matches another record
Court case follows the same incident
Minimum standard: Confirm at least two independent identifiers before sending money, publishing an allegation or treating a result as belonging to a particular person.
Same name, different birth date Treat the records as different people unless the record custodian confirms a clerical error.
Same name in several counties Do not merge records without matching the case number, arrest date and date of birth.
DCI shows several possible matches Use fingerprint comparison to establish positive identity.
Jail charge differs from court charge Use the court filing and disposition as the later official case record.

Why an Iowa arrest may be missing

Booking is incomplete Fingerprinting, identification, medical screening and data entry may still be underway.
The wrong county was searched Search the place of arrest, not only the person’s residence.
The name is different Try an alias, maiden name, former surname, hyphenated name or suffix.
The person was released A current roster may remove released people or move them to a historical-booking search.
The person was transferred Check another county, Iowa DOC custody or federal custody.
The offense was not reported to DCI DCI cannot add an arrest when it never receives the required fingerprint or agency data.
The court disposition is missing A public DCI requester may not receive an arrest over 18 months old without disposition unless a qualifying signed release is provided.
The record is confidential Juvenile, sealed, expunged and other protected information may be unavailable.

The legacy direct-search website currently displays an upgrade and downtime notice. Use the current Iowa.gov request process, mail, fax or in-person service rather than relying on an old bookmarked search page.
Gather the required identity information You need the subject’s first name, last name and date of birth.
Add helpful identity fields A middle name, gender and Social Security number can reduce common-name matches.
Decide whether a signed release is needed An ordinary public request does not require a release. Use the approved signed release when completed deferred judgments or older arrests without disposition may be relevant.
Prepare a separate request for each last name Each surname requires its own request form, billing form and $15 payment.

DCI result decoder

What an Iowa DCI result includes—and what it can miss

DCI can include

  • Reportable Iowa arrests supported by agency submissions
  • Fingerprint-based identifiers received from Iowa agencies
  • Iowa Judicial Branch disposition information
  • Iowa Department of Corrections custody information
  • Aliases and physical identifiers contained in the record
  • Charges, tracking numbers, judgments and sentences

DCI does not provide

  • Arrests from other states
  • A complete FBI national history
  • Federal convictions within Iowa
  • Most minor traffic matters
  • Most confidential juvenile records
  • A guarantee that every Iowa arrest was reported
Important Iowa disclosure limitations
Situation Public-request treatment What to do
Arrest over 18 months old without disposition Not released to an ordinary public requester. Use the approved signed release or obtain the court disposition.
Successfully completed deferred judgment Restricted from ordinary public release after DCI receives notice. Use the approved subject release when legally permitted.
Juvenile record Generally confidential unless made public by law or court order. Contact the juvenile court clerk about the authorized process.
No fingerprint submission DCI may have no record of the arrest. Search the county, agency and court directly.
No record response Does not prove the person has never been arrested. Check spelling, aliases, date of birth, county and federal or out-of-state systems.
Every DCI release must communicate that an arrest without disposition is not an indication of guilt.
DCI states that a statewide record may be incomplete when an arrest was never reported, was not fingerprinted, involved a non-reportable offense or lacks a usable court disposition.
Police and sheriff reports

Request an Iowa arrest report under Chapter 22

Identify the agency that created the report Use the jail booking, citation, probable-cause document or court docket to identify the police department, sheriff or state agency.
Do not send every request to the county jail The jail may hold the person but may not maintain the investigative narrative.
Name the exact documents Ask for the incident report, arrest report, probable-cause narrative and identified releasable supplements.
Provide precise identifiers Include the full name, date of birth, incident date, location, report number, booking number and court case number.
Request electronic delivery Electronic records can reduce copying and mailing expenses.
Set a cost ceiling Ask the agency to provide an estimate before charges exceed a stated amount.
Request the legal reason for withheld information Ask the custodian to identify the confidentiality basis for each denial or redaction.
Use the Iowa Public Information Board when necessary The board provides Chapter 22 guidance and complaint procedures. Open Iowa public-record guidance
Copy-ready Iowa public-record request

Practical Chapter 22 rules
Issue Iowa rule or guidance What the requester should do
Request method Requests may be made in person, in writing, by telephone or electronically. Use email when a written record of the request is helpful.
Physical presence A custodian cannot require physical presence merely to receive a copy. Ask for electronic delivery when practical.
Simple request cost The custodian should make every reasonable effort to provide records taking under 30 minutes at no cost beyond copying. Keep the request narrow and specific.
Estimated expense Necessary expenses must be reasonable and communicated when the request is received. Require approval before the estimate is exceeded.
Production deadline Chapter 22 does not create one fixed deadline for every request. Ask for acknowledgment and an estimated completion date.
Confidentiality review delay A good-faith delay should ordinarily not exceed 10 business days and cannot exceed 20 calendar days in the statutory circumstance. Ask which confidentiality issue requires additional review.
Legal-review charges Chargeable attorney work is limited to reviewing or redacting legally protected confidential information. Ask for an itemized explanation of legal-review expenses.

Warrant verification

Check an Iowa warrant without relying on an old list

Iowa’s law-enforcement IOWA and NCIC warrant systems are not unrestricted public people-search databases. Public warrant access depends on the county, sheriff and issuing court.
Identify the likely county and issuing court Use a citation, missed court date, prior case, booking or official notice.
Search Iowa Courts Online Review the newest docket entries for warrant, arrest warrant, failure to appear, served, recalled or cancelled activity.
Check the county sheriff website Some counties publish active-warrant lists; others require direct contact.
Search every relevant case One person may have separate warrants in different counties.
Confirm current status with the issuing office Contact the clerk or sheriff rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Use a defense lawyer when the warrant concerns you Counsel can explain surrender, appearance, bond and hearing options.
Do not confront or attempt to detain anyone. Similar names, recalled warrants, identity theft and delayed database updates can create dangerous mistakes.
Payment scam warning: Independently call the issuing court or sheriff before paying anyone who demands gift cards, cryptocurrency, a wire transfer or payment through a text-message link.
Bond and release

Confirm every Iowa charge and hold before paying bond

Release on recognizance

The court may order release based on a promise to appear and compliance with conditions.

Cash bond

The full court-approved amount is deposited using the accepted county procedure.

Surety bond

A qualified bond provider may post the required undertaking where legally permitted.

Hold or detention

Another case, court, probation matter or agency detainer may prevent release.

Confirm the correct person Match the full legal name, birth date and booking number.
List every active case Record the release condition for each charge.
Identify all holds Ask whether another Iowa county, state, federal or probation authority controls release.
Confirm the newest judicial order The initial jail amount may change after a court hearing.
Ask where payment is accepted Payment may be handled by the jail, sheriff, clerk or another approved office.
Verify the accepted payment method Do not assume that cash, card, money order or online payment is accepted in every county.
Obtain a complete receipt Save the person’s name, booking number, case number, amount and transaction confirmation.
Allow release processing time Staff must verify payment, clear holds, complete paperwork and return property.
Bond-verification script
I am calling about [full legal name], booking number [number]. Please confirm every active charge, the current bond or release condition for each case, every outside hold, accepted payment methods and whether additional court or agency approval is required before release.
