Search the legal surname first
Keep the initial search broad when the middle name or spelling is uncertain.
Open every plausible match
Do not assume a common-name result is the correct person.
Compare identity information
Use age or date of birth, booking information, arrest date and other displayed identifiers.
Save the booking or inmate identifier
Keep it for jail calls, visitation, records questions and financial transactions.
Read every charge separately
One jail stay may involve several charges, cases or outside warrants.
Confirm current custody before sending money
Release or transfer can change the correct facility and service provider.
The detention center houses males and females age 17 and older. Houston County states that pretrial detainees remain until they bond out or reach court, while some sentenced misdemeanor inmates can serve up to one year locally and felony-sentenced inmates may wait for transfer to the Georgia Department of Corrections.

Ongoing investigations, confidential information and legally protected information may be redacted.

Benchmark court search
Find the filed charges and final Houston County court outcome
Houston County’s current Benchmark system can search by name, Soundex name, case number, citation number, vehicle tag, prosecutor case number, arresting case number, warrant number, driver-license number, opening/closing dates, birth year and court type.
Use the court case number when known
This is safer than a common-name search.
Otherwise search the legal name
Include alias results when the person has used another name.
Filter the court type
Options include Magistrate Criminal, State Criminal and Superior Criminal.
Try the arresting case number
This can help connect law-enforcement paperwork to the court case.
Try the warrant number
Useful when researching a specific court warrant.
Match the party and timeline
Compare birth year, arrest date, court opening date and charges.
Read every count separately
A person may have one dismissed charge and another conviction in the same case.
Find the final disposition
Look for dismissal, nolle prosequi, plea, judgment, sentence or another final result.
Order the actual document when needed
The Clerk can provide standard or certified copies.
Since November 12, 2025, Houston County Superior and State Courts use the Benchmark system for electronic criminal and civil filings. PeachCourt is no longer the filing system for those courts.

Mail, calls and inmate money
Verify jail service instructions before sending anything
Houston County’s current public detention page confirms PayTel visitation but does not publish a complete current personal-mail, commissary and inmate-money instruction set on that page. Do not guess a vendor or mailing address from another Houston County in another state.
Before sending mail
- Confirm the inmate is still housed in Houston County.
- Obtain the exact inmate or booking identifier.
- Call the Detention Center for the current inmate-mail address.
- Ask whether personal mail is physically delivered or scanned.
- Confirm photograph, envelope and publication restrictions.
Before adding money
- Verify the inmate identity.
- Ask which commissary/deposit provider is currently authorized.
- Ask whether lobby, web or telephone deposits are accepted.
- Review transaction fees.
- Keep the receipt and confirmation number.
Before funding calls
- Ask which telephone provider currently serves the facility.
- Use only the provider confirmed by Houston County.
- Check call rates and account fees.
- Remember that ordinary jail communications may be monitored.

Use GDC after a person leaves county-jail custody
Use GDC search when
- A felony sentence resulted in state correctional custody.
- The person has been transferred from the county jail.
- You need the current GDC facility.
- You have a GDC ID or case number.
Do not use GDC alone for
- A new Houston County arrest.

Search by ID when known
A correctional identifier reduces same-name errors.
Otherwise search name and description
Compare available identifying information.
Record the current facility
State-prison mail and visitation rules depend on the assigned institution.
Return to Houston County court for legal proof

Do not confuse correction with restriction. Correction is used when a record is factually wrong or incomplete. Restriction is used when an accurate arrest record qualifies to be hidden from most non-criminal-justice background checks.
Georgia record restriction
Restrict an eligible Houston County arrest record
Georgia uses the term record restriction for many records people informally call “expunged.” A restricted arrest cycle is generally unavailable to private people and businesses through ordinary Georgia criminal-history dissemination, although criminal-justice access remains.
First determine the arrest date
Arrest after July 1, 2013
GBI states there is generally no old-style restriction application. Contact the prosecutor handling the case and request restriction when the disposition and law permit it.
Arrest before July 1, 2013
The older process begins with the arresting agency using the Request to Restrict Arrest Record form.
Examples of dispositions GBI identifies as potentially qualifying
Dismissed
Nolle prossed / nolle prosequi
Not presented to grand jury
No further action anticipated
Dead docket in qualifying circumstances
No record on file in qualifying circumstances
A guilty disposition is not automatically eligible for ordinary arrest-record restriction merely because time has passed. Other Georgia remedies, such as First Offender treatment or court-based sealing provisions, can follow different rules.
Get your criminal history first
Verify the arrest date, charge and final disposition.
Search the Houston County court case
Make sure every charge contains the correct final disposition.
Fix a missing disposition before requesting restriction
Contact the appropriate Houston County Clerk if the court result is missing or wrong.
Determine whether the arrest was before or after July 1, 2013
The starting process differs.
For post-July 1, 2013 arrests, contact the prosecutor
Felony matters normally involve the District Attorney; State Court misdemeanors involve the Solicitor-General.
For older Houston County Sheriff arrests, contact Records
Ask for the current legacy record-restriction procedure.
Call 478-542-2130
Complete agency and prosecutor review
The record cannot be restricted merely because the applicant requests it.
Verify GCIC after approval
Recheck the statewide criminal history after processing.

Because Georgia changed the restriction process for arrests occurring after July 1, 2013, do not automatically pay the older agency fee for a newer arrest. Confirm the correct route with the prosecutor or Records Division first.
