BOOKING + COURT VERIFIED
An arrest is not a conviction. A Sheriff booking shows a custody event and allegations. The District Attorney may decline, add or change charges, and the Superior Court may dismiss a count or enter a not-guilty result. Always verify the disposition.

SHERIFF JAIL SEARCH
Is the person in county custody?
Find the booking, current facility, charges and custody information.
Use first after a recent arrest.
ARRESTING AGENCY
What did officers report?
Request the arrest or incident report from the agency that created it.
A jail booking does not make every report a Sheriff record.
SUPERIOR COURT
What charges were filed?
Use the criminal case number to review court activity and disposition.
This is where arrest allegations become court charges.
CALIFORNIA DOJ
What appears on my state RAP sheet?
Request your own fingerprint-based California criminal-history record.
Third parties cannot order your unrestricted DOJ history.
RECORD RELIEF
Can the case be cleaned?
Use arrest sealing, conviction dismissal or another California relief path.
The correct remedy depends on the disposition.
Best sequence: Sheriff booking → save booking number → identify arresting agency → Superior Court case → final disposition → order only the official document still needed.
Official inmate lookup
Search Ventura County jail bookings step by step
Open the Ventura County Sheriff’s Inmate Search
Use the official jail database.
Open Inmate Search
Choose name or booking number
The system accepts first and last name or a booking number.
For a name search, enter at least the required characters
The current search requires at least two characters of the last name and at least one character of the first name.
Add middle name or DOB only when useful
Additional identity information can help narrow similar names in the jail search.
Open every plausible match
Do not assume the first identical name is the correct person.
Save the booking number
Use it later for inmate communication, mail, facility questions and record matching.
Verify the current facility
The person may be at Pre-Trial, Todd Road or another Ventura County custody facility.
Read all charges and bail information separately
Multiple charges or cases can appear in one custody event.

Full legal name matches
Middle name or suffix is consistent
DOB or age matches when available
Booking date matches the incident
Booking number matches another official source
Arresting agency matches the location
Court case follows the same event
No conflicting identifiers belong to another person
Do not rely on a mugshot or name alone. Match at least two independent identifiers before publishing an allegation, sending money or making a consequential decision.
Troubleshooting
No inmate result? Check these causes before assuming no arrest occurred
The arrest is very recent
Booking, fingerprinting, classification and data entry may still be underway.
The person was released
A custody search is not the same thing as a permanent arrest-history database.
The name is recorded differently
Try the legal surname, former surname, suffix or alternate spelling.
The person was cited and released
A criminal case may exist even without a long jail stay.
Another county made the booking
Search the custody system for the actual place of arrest.
The person entered state custody
Use California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation after a state-prison transfer.
The court case is older
Some older felony data is incomplete online and must be researched through Court Records.
The record was sealed
Sealed or confidential records may no longer be publicly available.
Custody verification script
I am trying to confirm the custody status of [full legal name], date of birth [if known]. The arrest may have occurred on [date] through [agency]. Can you confirm whether the person is still being booked, currently housed, released or transferred, and whether there is a booking number I should use?
Arrest-to-court path
Follow the record through every stage
Law-enforcement arrest
The Sheriff, Ventura Police, Oxnard Police, Simi Valley Police or another agency creates the arrest/incident record.
County booking
Sheriff detention staff create the booking record and custody identifiers.
Bail or pretrial decision
Release depends on the offense, court order, bail status and any other hold.
District Attorney review
Prosecutors decide what criminal charges will be filed.
Superior Court case
Hearings, amended charges, pleas, motions and trial activity appear in the court file.
Disposition
Each count may end by dismissal, acquittal, plea, conviction or another order.
Sentence or supervision
The judgment can involve jail, probation, state prison, fines, treatment or other conditions.
Record relief
Depending on the result, the person may use arrest sealing, conviction dismissal or another California relief procedure.
Record ownership
Identify the arresting agency before requesting the police report

Arrest and incident reports
Request the report without asking for the wrong record
Confirm the arresting agency
Read the Sheriff booking or other official paperwork first.
Save the report number
A report or incident number is much more precise than a name-only request.
Name the exact record
Ask for the arrest report, incident report, probable-cause narrative or specifically identified supplemental material.
Add the booking and court numbers
These help separate similar people and incidents.
Request an electronic copy where available
This can reduce printing and mailing.
Set a cost ceiling
Ask for an estimate before processing if charges will exceed a stated amount.
Use Ventura County’s public-record process when appropriate
The County states that public-record requests are handled through its official Public Records Portal.
Open County public-record instructions
Copy-ready request
I request an electronic copy of the releasable arrest report, incident report and specifically identified supplements concerning [full legal name] for the incident on or about [date] at [location]. Known identifiers include report number [number], Ventura County booking number [number] and Superior Court case number [number]. Please provide a cost estimate before processing if fees will exceed $[amount].
Superior Court
Find the charges actually filed in Ventura County Superior Court
Important search limit: the criminal case inquiry no longer allows public searching by date of birth or driver’s-license number. Use first and last name or case number.
Use the case number first
This is the safest way to avoid same-name cases.
Otherwise enter first and last name
DOB and driver’s-license searches are not available to the public through this system.
Match the filing timeline
Compare the case with the known arrest or booking date.
Read the filed charges
Do not assume they are identical to the booking allegations.
Review court events chronologically
Look for arraignment, pleas, warrants, motions, trial, sentencing and later orders.
Find the disposition for each count
Different counts in the same case can end differently.
Order the controlling document
Use the Court Records Department when official proof is required.
Historical coverage: Municipal Court cases began entering the online system in 1989. Only current infractions and misdemeanors are available from that older municipal data. Superior Court cases began entering the combined system in 1995, and older felony cases may be incomplete or absent online.

California criminal history
Request your own fingerprint-based California RAP sheet
California DOJ does not provide an unrestricted person’s criminal-history record to an ordinary third party. The individual may request their own record for review and correction.
Download Form BCIA 8016RR
California residents use the Request for Live Scan Service form.
Select “Record Review”
Enter Record Review as the reason for application.
Complete your personal information
Use accurate legal identity information.
Take the form to a Live Scan provider
Police departments, Sheriff’s offices and public Live Scan sites may provide fingerprinting.
Pay the DOJ processing fee
California DOJ’s Record Review fee is currently $25; the fingerprinting provider may charge a separate rolling fee.
Review every arrest and disposition
Compare the RAP sheet with Ventura County court documents.
Record correction
Fix an incorrect Ventura County or California criminal record
Identify where the error appears
Compare the Sheriff booking, arresting-agency report, Superior Court case and DOJ RAP sheet.
Obtain the controlling document
A certified court disposition is often the strongest proof of a wrong final outcome.
Correct the originating source
Police errors go to the arresting agency; court errors go to the court.
Use DOJ Form BCIA 8706 for a state-history challenge
DOJ includes the Claim of Alleged Inaccuracy or Incompleteness form when criminal information appears in the Record Review response.
Explain the exact disputed item
State the arrest, charge or disposition that is inaccurate and attach proof.
Recheck connected systems after correction
Updates may not appear simultaneously in every government or private database.
Correction is not expungement. Correct a record when it is factually wrong. Use sealing or dismissal when the record is accurate but legally eligible for relief.
Arrest sealing
Seal an arrest that did not result in conviction
California Penal Code §851.91 can allow sealing when an arrest did not result in conviction.
Situations that can qualify
Arrest but no charges filed
Charges filed and later dismissed
Diversion completed and charges dismissed
Deferred entry of judgment completed and dismissed
Trial ended in a not-guilty verdict
Another specific California sealing statute applies
Find the arrest and court result
Collect the booking number and case number.
Check whether DOJ already applied automatic relief
Penal Code §851.93 may automatically seal qualifying arrests.
Use Form CR-409 when a court petition is appropriate
This is the statewide Petition to Seal Arrest and Related Records.
Read CR-409-INFO first
It explains eligibility, filing and what the judge considers.
File in the appropriate court
The court uses Form CR-410 when granting or denying the sealing request.
Sealing generally prevents ordinary public access, but authorized government and law-enforcement users may still have lawful access. It is not identical to physically destroying every government record.
Conviction dismissal
Understand what California “expungement” actually does
California’s common conviction “expungement” process is usually a statutory dismissal—not deletion of every arrest and criminal-history record.
Arrest sealing
Targets qualifying arrests that did not lead to conviction and can restrict the related arrest/court record from public access.
Conviction dismissal
A qualifying conviction can be set aside and dismissed under California record-cleaning statutes, but the historical record is not simply erased from every government system.
Read the Ventura County judgment
Determine the exact conviction, sentence and completion status.
Check whether another criminal case is pending
California dismissal eligibility generally requires no new case pending and no current probation or parole.
Use CR-180 and CR-181 when appropriate
CR-180 is the Petition for Dismissal and CR-181 is the court’s order.
Ventura County currently charges no expungement filing fee
The local court FAQ states there is no fee for its standard expungement process.
Allow time for the ruling
Ventura Superior Court says the process is commonly about three to four weeks after judicial review, although it can take longer.
Use Public Defender Fresh Start for help
Fresh Start assists eligible clients with felony expungement, sealing, early probation termination, certificates of rehabilitation and related relief.
Open Ventura Fresh Start

Ventura County arrest FAQs
Ventura County arrest-record questions answered
How do I search Ventura County arrest records?
Start with the Ventura County Sheriff’s official Inmate Search. Search by name or booking number, verify the booking and then check the connected Superior Court criminal case.
Can I search by booking number?
Yes. The Sheriff’s search accepts a booking number, which is generally safer than a common-name search.
Can I search the Ventura criminal court by date of birth?
No. The public court inquiry no longer permits searching by date of birth or driver’s-license number. Use the defendant’s first and last name or case number.
How much are Ventura County court copies?
Court copies currently cost $0.50 per page. Certification costs an additional $40.
Where do I request an arrest report?
Request it from the law-enforcement agency that created it. A Sheriff booking does not mean the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office created every underlying police report.
How do I check bail?
Verify the inmate, every charge and every hold, then compare the live custody information with the current court order and applicable bail schedule before paying.
How do I visit a Ventura County inmate?
Verify the person’s current facility and housing unit, check the Sheriff’s current visiting schedule and call the facility before traveling because inmates can be re-housed.
How do I get a Public Defender?
A qualifying defendant can request appointed counsel. Ventura County Public Defender adult criminal cases can be reached at 805-654-2201.
How do I obtain my California RAP sheet?
California residents use Live Scan Form BCIA 8016RR for DOJ Record Review. The DOJ processing fee is currently $25 plus any separate Live Scan rolling fee.
Can a Ventura County arrest record be sealed?
Some arrests that did not result in conviction can qualify for sealing under Penal Code §851.91. Conviction dismissal is a separate process, commonly using forms CR-180 and CR-181.
