Online, mail, fax or hand delivery are published options. Requests can also be verbal, although a written request provides a clearer record of exactly what was requested.

Kent County publishes a 5-business-day processing period, with a possible 10-business-day extension.

Deposit

When the estimated fee exceeds $50, the county can require a deposit of up to one-half of the estimated total before processing.

Indigence waiver

Qualifying requesters can seek a waiver of the first $20 of fees by filing the required indigence affidavit, subject to statutory limits.

Save time: Do not use FOIA merely to obtain information already available through Jail Viewer or an online court system. FOIA is most useful when you need the actual police report, booking record, photograph or another document not already accessible online.

Kent County contains multiple district courts. The correct court depends primarily on where the alleged offense occurred. Felony cases that continue beyond the district-court phase generally proceed to the 17th Circuit Court.

Restrictive-housing visits

Inmates in disciplinary or administrative restrictive housing who are not on cell restriction may receive one personal visit per week on Friday, Saturday or Sunday from 8:00–9:00 a.m. A person on cell restriction cannot receive personal visits during the first 15 days of the restriction.

Michigan commonly uses the phrase set aside for what many people call expungement. A conviction that has been set aside becomes nonpublic in the ordinary public criminal-history system, but eligibility and legal effects depend on the applicable Michigan law.
