Trace a Kent County Booking From the Jail Record to the Final Court Result

A Kent County arrest can create several separate records: a police report, county jail booking, bond order, district-court case, circuit-court case and Michigan criminal-history entry.

This page explains how those records connect and brings the important jail, visitation, mail, phone, bond, FOIA, court, public-defense, victim-service and Clean Slate rules into one practical guide.

Arrest is not conviction. Kent County expressly warns that Jail Viewer information can include offenses supplied by an arresting agency but an arrest does not mean the person has been convicted. Verify the court disposition before treating an allegation as a proven result.
2026 visitation change Effective April 6, 2026, Kent County ended onsite professional and personal visitation between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Online visitation remains available during the evening period under the published schedule.

Which Kent County record actually answers your question?

SHERIFF JAIL VIEWER Is the person in county jail?

Search people booked into the Kent County Correctional Facility and review available descriptive, booking, mugshot and charge information.

Best for current county custody—not a complete historical criminal record.
ARRESTING AGENCY What allegedly happened?

Request the police incident report, arrest report or related records from the agency that created them.

A Grand Rapids Police report does not become a Sheriff report merely because the person was booked at KCCF.
DISTRICT COURT What happened first in court?

Misdemeanors and preliminary felony proceedings are handled in the district court with jurisdiction over the incident location.

Kent County has several district courts, so jurisdiction matters.
17TH CIRCUIT Did the felony proceed?

Use Circuit Court records for felony cases that advance to circuit court and for the later judgment or sentence.

Search by case number whenever possible.
MICHIGAN MSP What appears statewide?

Use ICHAT for public Michigan criminal-history information or the fingerprint process for a fuller personal record.

ICHAT is not a warrant search and does not contain every local or nonpublic record.
Best sequence: Find the booking → save the identity and booking details → identify the arresting agency → identify the correct district court → follow a felony into the 17th Circuit Court when applicable → obtain the disposition or certified document only when needed.

How to search Kent County Jail bookings

Open the official Web Jail Viewer Use the Kent County Sheriff’s jail application rather than a paid people-search website. Open Kent County Web Jail Viewer
Search the legal name Start broad if the middle name, suffix or exact spelling is uncertain.
Open each possible match Do not assume the first matching name belongs to the person you are researching.
Compare descriptive information Review available age, birth information, physical description, photograph and booking details.
Record the Booking / ID information The correct identifier is needed for personal mail, visitation, deposits and other inmate services.
Identify the arresting agency This tells you which agency is most likely to hold the underlying police report.
Read every charge line A booking can contain several charges or holds. Treat each separately.
Check the current bond information Bond can change after arraignment or later court action.
Identify the court The court—not the jail—shows what was formally filed and what ultimately happened.
Recheck custody before taking action Call 616-632-6300 and choose Option 1 when live confirmation is important.
Kent County warns that online inmate information can change quickly and may be incomplete or inaccurate. True identity can ultimately require fingerprint comparison.
Result decoder

What a Kent County jail result tells you—and what it does not

Use the booking as the starting point, not the final conclusion
Field Meaning Does not prove Best next action
Booking / ID number Identifies the inmate or custody entry in the Kent County facility system. The final criminal disposition. Save it for visitation, mail, deposits and jail questions.
Booking date When the person entered the facility’s booking process. The exact time the alleged offense occurred. Compare the arrest date and police report.
Arresting agency The agency responsible for the arrest or charge entry. Kent County Sheriff wrote the original incident report. Request the narrative from the named agency.
Offense / charge The allegation supplied to or recorded by the jail. Formal prosecutor filing or guilt. Compare it with district and circuit court records.
Mugshot A booking photograph when the facility makes one publicly available. Identity by itself or criminal responsibility. Match stronger identifiers.
Bond A release security amount or percentage set for a matter. That payment resolves every charge or hold. Confirm all cases and holds before paying.
Housing The current correctional assignment when displayed. The location will remain unchanged. Recheck before visiting.
Release The county custody episode ended or release processing occurred. The case was dismissed. Check the court disposition.
Identity safeguard

Match the person before relying on the arrest record

Full legal name is consistent
Middle name, suffix or alias is consistent
Birth information or age is consistent
Booking date matches the known event
Arresting agency matches the location
Booking / ID number matches other records
Court case follows the same arrest
Final disposition belongs to that exact case
Minimum safeguard: Match at least two independent identifiers before sending money, publishing an accusation or treating a same-name result as belonging to a particular person.
Troubleshooting

No Kent County jail result found?

The arrest is very recent Processing, fingerprinting, medical screening and data entry may still be underway.
The person was released quickly A person can have an arrest or court case without remaining in current county custody.
The person received a citation Not every misdemeanor results in a county jail admission.
The spelling differs Try an alternate spelling, alias, former surname, hyphen variation or suffix.
The arrest occurred elsewhere Search the county or jurisdiction where the person was actually booked.
The person moved to state custody A sentenced person may later appear through Michigan DOC OTIS instead of the county jail.
The record is legally restricted Juvenile, suppressed or set-aside records may not be publicly displayed.
You need a past case rather than current jail data Search the district or circuit court instead.
Missing-custody call script
I am trying to confirm whether [full legal name], date of birth or age [information], was booked into or remains at the Kent County Correctional Facility. The arrest may have occurred on [date] through [agency]. Can you confirm whether the person is currently held, released, transferred or listed under another identifier?
Arrest-to-disposition

What happens after a Kent County arrest?

Police investigation The arresting law-enforcement agency creates the incident report, arrest documentation and investigative records.
County booking The Correctional Facility records the person, incoming charges, identifiers, property and custody information.
Arraignment The district court advises the defendant of the charge, rights and potential penalties and addresses bond or release.
Prosecutor filing The prosecutor can authorize, change or decline charges based on the available evidence and Michigan law.
Misdemeanor track A misdemeanor ordinarily remains in the district court with jurisdiction over the case.
Felony district-court stage A felony begins with district-court proceedings before a qualifying case is bound over to Circuit Court.
17th Circuit felony case The Circuit Court record can contain later hearings, motions, plea, trial, judgment and sentence.
Release or state transfer The person may be released, remain detained or later transfer to Michigan Department of Corrections custody.
Final disposition Look for dismissal, plea, acquittal, conviction, judgment, sentence or another final order.
Correction or set aside Incorrect reporting can be corrected, and qualifying Michigan convictions may later be set aside.

Add the known identifiers Include full legal name, date, location, report number, booking number and court case when available.
Request electronic delivery Digital records can reduce copying and mailing expenses when the record exists electronically.
Set a cost limit Ask the county to provide an estimate before processing if the total will exceed a stated amount.

Please provide a written estimate before processing if charges will exceed $[amount], and identify the applicable basis for material withheld or redacted.
FOIA timing and cost

Know Kent County’s public-record request rules before filing

How to submit

Online, mail, fax or hand delivery are published options. Requests can also be verbal, although a written request provides a clearer record of exactly what was requested.

Normal response

Kent County publishes a 5-business-day processing period, with a possible 10-business-day extension.

Electronic timing

An electronically transmitted written request is deemed received by the FOIA coordinator one business day after transmission.

Possible charges

Labor, copying, postage and shipping can be charged as allowed under FOIA.

Deposit

When the estimated fee exceeds $50, the county can require a deposit of up to one-half of the estimated total before processing.

Indigence waiver

Qualifying requesters can seek a waiver of the first $20 of fees by filing the required indigence affidavit, subject to statutory limits.

Save time: Do not use FOIA merely to obtain information already available through Jail Viewer or an online court system. FOIA is most useful when you need the actual police report, booking record, photograph or another document not already accessible online.
Court jurisdiction

Do not search only one Kent County court

Kent County contains multiple district courts. The correct court depends primarily on where the alleged offense occurred. Felony cases that continue beyond the district-court phase generally proceed to the 17th Circuit Court.

Common mistake: A person can be booked into the Kent County Correctional Facility after an arrest inside Grand Rapids, but the early criminal case may be in 61st District Court—not 63rd District Court.

Open Kent County’s Circuit Court search For criminal name searches, have the defendant’s full name and date of birth available. Open 17th Circuit Court Name Search
Use the case number when known This reduces wrong-person matches.
Compare the formal felony charges Do not assume they are identical to the charges shown in Jail Viewer.
Read events chronologically Track arraignment, motions, plea proceedings, trial, judgment and sentencing.
Find the final result for every count A multi-count case can have different results for different charges.
Call for an older or missing case Kent County’s pages currently publish different online search-history descriptions, so do not assume an older case is absent merely because it is missing from one online interface.
District-court records

Search Kent County misdemeanor and preliminary felony cases

The Michigan Judicial Branch’s MiCOURT system is used by participating district courts. Online information is for informational use and does not replace the official record held by the court.
Identify the correct district court first Use the location of the alleged offense rather than the inmate’s home address.
Open MiCOURT Case Search Accept the terms and select the appropriate court. Open Michigan MiCOURT Case Search
Search the case number whenever possible A case-number search is less ambiguous than a common-name search.
Otherwise search the defendant’s name Compare the result against the arrest and booking details.
Read the charge level carefully MiCOURT warns of a display issue involving some attempted felony offenses, so contact the trial court when the classification affects your decision.
Look for the disposition Find dismissal, plea, conviction, acquittal or another final order.
Contact the court for older cases Some MiCOURT courts restrict how much older criminal-conviction information appears online.

Useful for understanding the chronological court history.

Judgment / sentence

Use when you need the final conviction and sentence information.

Certified disposition

Ask the court what certified document best proves how the charge ended.

Do not over-order. Ask the organization requesting proof whether it needs a register of actions, judgment, dismissal order or certified copy before paying for an entire file.
Warrant verification

Check a possible Kent County warrant through the case record

Identify the court case Use the cause or case number from the booking, notice or prior court record.
Open the correct district or Circuit Court search Do not assume every Kent County warrant belongs to one court.
Read entries in chronological order A warrant-issued entry can be followed by service, recall, cancellation or another order.
Confirm directly with the court When the warrant concerns you or immediate action depends on it, contact the court of record.
Do not use ICHAT as a warrant search Michigan State Police specifically states that warrant information is not available through ICHAT.
Never confront, detain or publicly accuse someone based only on an apparent warrant result. Confirm the identity and current status with the court or responsible agency.
Bond and release

Post a Kent County Jail bond correctly

Kent County Jail Processing Office
Located next to the visitor entrance at the Kent County Correctional Facility.
Bond payment is accepted 24 hours a day.

Cash or 10% bond

  • Pay the full cash bond when a full cash bond is ordered.
  • Pay 10% when the court specifically sets a 10% bond.
  • When the defendant appears as required, a full cash bond or 90% of a 10% bond is generally refundable, less applicable court fines or fees.
  • Failure to appear can cause forfeiture.

Surety bond

  • A private bonding agency guarantees the person’s appearance.
  • The company charges its own nonrefundable fee.
  • Kent County is not a party to that private agreement.
  • Use the county’s current approved-bonding-agency list.

Split payments are not allowed
Kent County warns that credit-card bond fees can be substantial. The current county page publishes a possible range of approximately 8%–20%, so confirm the total card fee before authorizing payment.
Confirm the current bond first Call the court or inmate information before traveling because the bond can change after arraignment.
Check every charge and hold Paying one bond may not resolve another case or detainer.
Choose one payment method Kent County does not allow split payment methods for one bond transaction.
Bring identification Keep the jail receipt and court information after payment.
Use an approved agency for surety The county’s list supersedes older approved-bond lists. Check currently approved bail bond agencies

Michigan Clean Slate

Check automatic set aside before filing a new application

Michigan commonly uses the phrase set aside for what many people call expungement. A conviction that has been set aside becomes nonpublic in the ordinary public criminal-history system, but eligibility and legal effects depend on the applicable Michigan law.

Automatic Clean Slate

  • Eligible convictions can be set aside without the person filing an application.
  • Automatic processing began in 2023.
  • Some eligible misdemeanors use a seven-year waiting period.
  • Eligible felonies use a ten-year waiting period.
  • Pending charges and new convictions can prevent automatic relief.

Application-based set aside

  • Filed in the court where the conviction occurred.
  • Separate applications may be needed for convictions in different courts.
  • Fingerprints are part of the process.
  • Certified court records are required.
  • MSP currently charges a $50 processing fee for adult application-based set aside review.

Automatic set-aside timing

Michigan State Police Clean Slate timing
Conviction category Automatic waiting period Published numerical limit
Misdemeanor punishable by less than 92 days 7 years No numerical limit under the published automatic criteria.
Misdemeanor punishable by 93 days or more 7 years Up to 4 qualifying convictions.
Felony 10 years Up to 2 qualifying convictions.
Automatic set aside excludes several offense categories, including specified assaultive crimes, serious misdemeanors, crimes of dishonesty, certain offenses involving minors or vulnerable adults, human trafficking and several traffic offenses. Do not use the waiting-period table alone as an eligibility decision.

Kent County MI arrest-record questions answered

How do I search Kent County arrest records?

Start with the Sheriff’s Web Jail Viewer for a Kent County Correctional Facility booking. Save the Booking/ID information and arresting agency, then search the correct district or Circuit Court for the filed charges and disposition.

How do I check whether someone is currently in the Kent County Jail?

Use Web Jail Viewer or call 616-632-6300 and choose Option 1 for inmate information. Recheck before paying bond, sending money or traveling.

Does a jail booking mean someone was convicted?

No. The booking records an arrest and custody event. Prosecutors and courts determine what charges proceed and how the case ends.

Which court should I search?

The correct district court depends on where the incident occurred. Kent County includes the 63rd, 61st, 62A, 62B and 59th District Courts. Felonies that proceed beyond the district stage generally move to the 17th Circuit Court.

How do I request the police report?

Request the record from the agency that created it. For Kent County Sheriff’s Office records, use Kent County’s FOIA system and include names, date, location, report number and other known identifiers.

What are the Kent County Jail visitation hours?

Onsite visitation is generally 8–11 a.m. and 1–5 p.m. seven days a week. Online visitation is generally available 8–11 a.m., 1–5 p.m. and 7–10 p.m.

Where do I send personal inmate mail?

Address it to Smart Communications, followed by the inmate name and Booking/ID Number, P.O. Box 9216, Seminole, FL 33775-9195. Personal mail sent directly to the jail is no longer accepted.

How much is Michigan ICHAT?

A public ICHAT search currently costs $10. It is a Michigan name-based public criminal-history search and does not include warrants, federal records, juvenile records or every local misdemeanor.

How do I correct a wrong Michigan criminal record?

Begin with the agency that reported the error: law enforcement for an arrest error, the prosecutor for a charge error or the court for judicial information. Michigan State Police can update the statewide record after the source agency verifies the correction.

Can a Kent County conviction be expunged?

Some Michigan convictions qualify for automatic Clean Slate set aside and others may qualify through an application filed in the court of conviction. Check the current eligibility rules before filing because exclusions and waiting periods apply.
