Arrest does not mean conviction. A Chatham County booking report records the information received during jail intake. Prosecutors can change or decline charges, and a court can dismiss a charge or find a defendant not guilty.

GEORGIA HISTORY

Most reliable sequence: booking → DIN/arrest number → arresting agency → correct court → final disposition.

Match the full name and birth date
Do not identify someone from a similar name alone.
Save the DIN
The Detainee Identification Number is one of the most useful jail identifiers.
Save the arrest number
This distinguishes a particular arrest event from another booking involving the same person.
Identify the arresting agency
The report can show Savannah Police, Chatham County Police, Sheriff, Georgia State Patrol, Pooler Police, another municipal department or a court hold.
Record every booking charge
One booking may contain several misdemeanors, felonies, warrants or holds.
Read the displayed bond carefully
A $0 entry does not automatically mean free release. A hold, court restriction or bond decision may still control custody.
Continue to the court record
The booking charge is not the final prosecution result.
Booking-photo limitation: Georgia law restricts certain distribution of booking photographs where the image would be used on a publication or website that charges for removal. Do not assume every booking photograph can be freely republished.

Have the arrest/report number, defendant name and case number ready.
Ask about upcoming case events
Keep the correct phone and email on file for notifications.
Ask about available practical assistance

Georgia state custody
Check GDC after transfer from the county jail
Use Georgia DOC for
- A person currently in a Georgia state correctional facility.
- GDC ID and current institution.
- State-prison contact and visitation routing.
Do not use GDC alone for
- A new Chatham County Jail arrest.
- Every historical Chatham booking.
- The actual indictment.
- The certified court disposition.
Search by GDC number when known
Otherwise use the person’s name and available description.
Record the current institution
The institution controls mail, telephone and visitation procedures.
Return to Superior Court for legal proof
The GDC locator is not a substitute for the court judgment.
Statewide Georgia record
Get a Chatham County Sheriff Georgia criminal-history check
The Sheriff currently publishes a $15 fee for its statewide Georgia name-search background check and states that the name search normally takes 3–5 business days.
Complete the form
Include a phone number in case staff needs additional information.
Sign and date with the required witness signature
Do not submit an incomplete waiver.
Include a copy of your driver license
Follow the Sheriff’s current identification requirements.
Prepare the $15 payment
The mail instructions specify money order or cashier’s check.
Mail the request
The Sheriff currently states that name-based background requests are handled by mail rather than walk-in submission.
Allow 3–5 business days for processing
Mailing time is additional.
The Sheriff’s Criminal History/Fingerprint page currently contains more than one set of published fingerprint-operation hours. Because those hours conflict on the same official page, call the unit before traveling for fingerprints rather than relying on one timetable.
Correct inaccurate information
Fix the source of an incorrect Georgia arrest record
Identify which system is wrong
Compare the Sheriff booking, arresting-agency report, court disposition and Georgia criminal history.
Save the incorrect entry
Record the DIN, arrest number, date, charge and court case number.
Obtain the controlling document
Examples include a corrected agency report or certified court disposition.
Correct arrest data with the arresting agency
GCIC states that the submitting law-enforcement agency must update arrest or identification data it originally submitted.
Correct court disposition data through the court
Missing or inaccurate final case information should be addressed with the court or other submitting justice agency.
Use GCIC identity-challenge procedures when necessary
Fingerprints are required when challenging an incorrect identity or another person’s criminal history being attached to you.
Correction and restriction are different. Correction fixes information that is factually wrong. Record restriction limits access to an accurate record when Georgia law allows it.
Georgia record restriction
Restrict an eligible Chatham County arrest record
Georgia now generally uses the term record restriction rather than “expungement.” Restricted information remains available to authorized criminal-justice users even though ordinary non-criminal-justice access is limited.
Arrest after July 1, 2013
GBI states that there is no application process through the arresting agency. Contact the prosecutor about restriction of an eligible record.
Arrest before July 1, 2013
The request begins with the arresting law-enforcement agency using the Georgia record-restriction form.
Examples of dispositions GBI identifies as potentially qualifying
Dismissed
Not presented to the grand jury
No further action anticipated
Nolle prosequi / nolle prossed
Dead docket
No record on file, when otherwise eligible
A guilty disposition is not eligible for this particular arrest-record restriction process merely because time has passed.
Obtain your criminal history first
Check that every Chatham County charge has a final disposition.
Fix missing dispositions before requesting restriction
A missing court outcome can prevent an accurate eligibility decision.
Identify the arrest date
The July 1, 2013 dividing line determines which procedure begins the request.
Keep the approval and final confirmation
Recheck the GCIC history and public systems after processing.
The Chatham Sheriff’s page still uses the older word “expungement” in places and publishes a $25 Sheriff processing fee plus a $25 GBI fee when an applicable older request is approved. Because newer post-July-2013 arrests follow a different prosecutor-based process, confirm which fee and form actually apply to the arrest date before paying.

Call Jail Records at 912-652-7734 with the name, birth date, approximate arrest date and any known DIN or arrest number.

Where do I request the arrest report?
Request it from the arresting agency. Savannah Police, Chatham County Police, Sheriff and the municipalities maintain separate agency records.
How do I post bond?
Confirm all charges and holds, then use the Sheriff’s approved cash, surety, card, online, property or out-of-county bond procedure. All bonds carry a published $20 nonrefundable bonding fee.
