Trace a Loudoun County Arrest From Custody to the Final Court Result
An arrest can create a jail record, Sheriff’s or police report, magistrate paperwork, General District Court case and sometimes a Circuit Court felony file. Those records do not all live in the same database.
Use this guide to verify current custody, understand charges, request the correct record, handle bond and visitation, obtain legal help and determine whether a Virginia record may now qualify for sealing or expungement.

Arrest does not equal conviction. A booking or warrant describes an allegation or custody event. The Commonwealth’s Attorney can amend or decline a charge, and a court can dismiss a charge or find a defendant not guilty.

Start with the correct record
Which Loudoun County record answers your question?
LOCAL JAIL / VINE
Is the person in custody?
Use Virginia VINE for local-jail custody status or call the Loudoun Adult Detention Center.
Best for live jail-status questions.
ADULT DETENTION CENTER
Where is the person housed?
Confirm booking details, visitation, mail, accounts, attorney access and release-related questions.
ADC: 703-777-0405.
ARRESTING AGENCY
What did officers report?
Request the appropriate incident summary, arrest-related record or other releasable data from the agency that created it.
Do not assume the jail owns the police report.
VIRGINIA COURTS
What happened to the charge?
Search General District Court and Circuit Court for filed charges, hearings, bond, plea, dismissal, judgment and sentencing.
The court result is stronger than the booking label.
VIRGINIA STATE POLICE
What appears statewide?
Use SP-167 when a Virginia criminal-history record is needed beyond Loudoun Sheriff’s local check.
Statewide history is a different product.
Current jail status
How to find someone held in Loudoun County
Start with Virginia VINE
VINE covers local-jail custody notifications in Virginia and is more appropriate for a live custody question than an old arrest article.
Open Virginia VINE
Search the legal name carefully
Try the surname first when you are uncertain about the middle name, suffix or spelling.
Confirm the facility
Look for Loudoun County Adult Detention Center rather than assuming every Loudoun arrest produces local jail custody.
Match more than the name
Compare age, booking information, arrest date and available identifiers.
Call the Adult Detention Center when the result is unclear
Contact
703-777-0405.
Save the booking number
Loudoun uses the booking number for personal mail and other inmate-related services.
Continue to Virginia court records
Jail custody explains detention—not the final criminal outcome.

The ADC also houses some federal, state, county and municipal detainees. A person appearing at the facility is not necessarily charged only with a Loudoun Sheriff’s Office offense.
Identity safeguard
Verify the person before relying on an arrest result
Full legal first and last name match
Middle name, suffix or alias is consistent
Date of birth or age is consistent
Arrest or booking date fits the known event
Arresting agency matches the location
Booking or case number matches another official record
Court charge follows the same incident
Fingerprint comparison is used when identity is disputed
Do not identify a person from a mugshot or common name alone. A mistaken identity can affect employment, housing, bail payments and reputation.
No-result troubleshooting
No Loudoun jail or arrest record found?
Booking is still being processed
Identification, medical intake, magistrate review and jail processing can delay a searchable custody result.
The person was released quickly
A person can leave custody while the criminal court case remains active.
The person received a summons instead of jail booking
Some criminal matters proceed in court without a stay at the Adult Detention Center.
Another agency made the arrest
Leesburg Police, Purcellville Police, Middleburg Police, Virginia State Police, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police or another agency may own the record.
The person is held outside Loudoun
A warrant or arrest can result in custody in another Virginia locality.
The name is different
Try an alias, former surname, suffix, alternate spelling or surname-only search.
The case moved from General District to Circuit Court
A felony can begin with a preliminary hearing and later continue in Circuit Court.
The record has been sealed or expunged
Virginia’s expanded sealing laws now remove qualifying records from ordinary public access.

Start with Loudoun General District Court for a new misdemeanor or preliminary felony case
Search by case number when known.
Match the defendant and charge date
Do not rely only on a common name.
Check the hearing history
Look for arraignment, bond hearing, preliminary hearing, continuance and disposition entries.
For a felony, continue to Circuit Court
A preliminary General District Court record may not contain the final felony disposition.
Read every count separately
One charge can be dismissed while another remains pending or results in conviction.
Find the final judgment
Look for dismissal, nolle prosequi, not guilty, guilty plea, conviction or sentencing.
Order the actual document when proof matters
An online case summary is useful for navigation; a certified court copy is stronger evidence.

Identify the exact criminal case number
Search the Virginia court system first.
Identify the exact document
Examples include indictment, sentencing order, dismissal order or another filed order.
Choose ordinary or certified
Ask the receiving organization before paying for certification.
Request in person or in writing
The Criminal Division says written turnaround depends on volume but it attempts to fulfill requests within two business days.
Include payment and return envelope for mail requests
Use check or money order according to the Clerk’s instructions.
Warrant verification
Check an arrest warrant without confusing it with a search warrant
Arrest warrant
Authorizes the arrest of a named person. A magistrate can issue arrest warrants and determine bail or commitment when authorized by Virginia law.
Search warrant
Authorizes law enforcement to search a place, property or person for specified evidence. Search-warrant affidavits and returns can become Circuit Court records.
Search the criminal court case
Review current Virginia Judicial System entries.
Check both court levels when the charge is a felony
A matter can move from General District to Circuit Court.
Look for later warrant events
An issued warrant can later be served, withdrawn or otherwise resolved.
Call the responsible court or Sheriff’s Office
Confirm current status before relying on an old docket entry.
Use a lawyer when the warrant concerns you
Counsel can address surrender, bond and court appearance issues.
Do not confront or attempt to detain anyone. Online court information can contain similar names or an earlier warrant status.
Search-warrant records
When a magistrate issues a search warrant, the officer must support the request with a sworn complaint and written affidavit establishing probable cause. After execution, the affidavit and return are filed with the Loudoun Circuit Court Clerk’s Criminal Division.
Bail and release
Understand who controls Loudoun County bail
Virginia magistrates have authority to admit a defendant to bail or commit a person to jail when authorized. Loudoun General District Court currently schedules bond hearings at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday.
Confirm the exact person and criminal case
Use the full name, booking number and court case number.
Identify every charge and warrant
One release amount may not resolve another hold.
Determine whether bail was set by the magistrate or court
Conditions can change at a later bond hearing.
Check the most recent court entry
Do not rely only on a booking or arrest news release.
Ask whether a secured bond, unsecured bond or other release condition applies
The precise release order controls.
Confirm outside holds before paying
Federal, immigration, another Virginia locality or another court can affect release.
Get every payment instruction from the responsible official source
Do not send money to a caller who claims a warrant or bond can be cleared through gift cards or cryptocurrency.

I am calling about [full legal name], booking number [number] and court case [number]. Please confirm the current bond or release order, every active hold, which office controls payment and whether any additional hearing or approval is required before release.
Community Corrections
What happens when the court orders pretrial supervision?
Loudoun Community Corrections prepares information to help courts make release or detention decisions. When a defendant is released on bond, the court can order Pretrial Services to supervise compliance with release conditions.
Pretrial supervision can apply to misdemeanor cases
Pretrial supervision can apply to felony cases
Conditions come from the court order
Failure to comply can create additional court consequences
A jail release does not end the criminal case

Virginia statewide criminal history
Use Virginia State Police SP-167 correctly
Do not confuse SP-167 with a jail search. The Virginia State Police criminal-history process is for a statewide criminal-history report; it does not tell you whether someone is currently in Loudoun jail.
Generate Form SP-167
Enter the required identifying and mailing information.
Print the generated form
The current process requires the form to be printed and mailed.
Sign and notarize the applicant section
When results are being released to another person or agency, additional notarization requirements can apply.
Use the fee shown for your request type
Virginia State Police currently references $15 and $20 criminal-history request categories. The generated form determines the applicable payment.
Mail one form per request
Send the completed request to Virginia State Police CARE.
Allow normal processing time
VSP currently states approximately 15 business days after receipt; its FAQ also describes normal mail turnaround as roughly 15–20 business days.
Do not expect same-day or expedited processing
Virginia State Police explicitly states that expedited service is unavailable.
Need a national check on yourself rather than Virginia-only history? Virginia State Police directs individuals to the FBI’s Identity History Summary process.
Wrong-person or inaccurate record
Correct a Loudoun or Virginia criminal-history error
Identify where the error appears
Compare the Sheriff’s record, municipal police record, General District case, Circuit Court file and VSP history.
Save the incorrect entry
Record the case number, arrest date, agency and disputed field.
Obtain the controlling document
Use the official police record or certified court disposition.
Contact the arresting agency first when the VSP criminal history is wrong
Virginia State Police specifically directs people with inaccurate criminal-history information to the arresting agency.
Use the formal criminal-record challenge for mistaken identity
A person whose name or descriptive information appears on someone else’s CCRE record can report to a local sheriff, police department or State Police and request fingerprinting for a record challenge.
Correct the court if the disposition is wrong
A police agency cannot rewrite a judicial judgment.
Recheck every connected system
A correction may not propagate instantly to every government or commercial background database.
Correction versus sealing: use correction when the information is factually wrong. Use sealing or expungement when the record is accurate but qualifies for restricted public access.
Major 2026 Virginia change
Virginia criminal-record sealing began July 1, 2026
Virginia now has both automatic sealing and petition sealing. These are different from traditional expungement. Sealing usually restricts public access but does not physically erase every government record.
Automatic sealing
The government initiates qualifying sealing without requiring the person to file a normal petition.
Petition sealing
The person files in Circuit Court and must satisfy the eligibility criteria for the specific sealing route.
Traditional expungement
Remains a separate remedy focused on qualifying charges that did not result in conviction.
Not destruction
Sealed records may remain available to authorized government entities and for specified statutory purposes.
Records that can enter automatic sealing processes
Petit larceny misdemeanor convictions
Shoplifting misdemeanor convictions
Trespassing and specified trespass convictions
Specified marijuana-distribution misdemeanor convictions
Disorderly conduct convictions
Certain possession-of-marijuana records
Misdemeanor acquittals on or after July 1, 2026
Misdemeanor dismissals with prejudice on or after July 1, 2026
Qualifying felony non-convictions with defendant request and Commonwealth concurrence
Qualifying older misdemeanor non-convictions
For the listed automatically sealable misdemeanor convictions, Virginia’s rules generally use a 7-year period from conviction and require no disqualifying conviction during that period. The offense generally must have occurred on or after January 1, 1986.
Petition sealing can cover more offenses
Virginia’s petition process can cover many misdemeanors, Class 5 and Class 6 felonies, grand larceny and other felony offenses punishable as larceny, provided all statutory requirements are satisfied.
Numerous offenses remain ineligible, including Class 1–4 felonies and specifically excluded categories involving sex offenses, violent felonies, firearm felonies, protective-order violations, hate crimes, certain crimes against family or household members and other listed offenses.
Main petition-sealing eligibility checks
High-value screening rules before filing
| Rule |
Current Virginia requirement |
| Class 1 or 2 felony / life-punishable felony |
A petitioner cannot have such a conviction. |
| Class 3 or 4 felony |
No such conviction within the previous 20 years. |
| Other felony |
No other felony conviction within the previous 10 years. |
| Misdemeanor waiting period |
Generally at least 7 years under the petition-sealing criteria. |
| Felony waiting period |
Generally at least 10 years under the petition-sealing criteria. |
| Restitution |
Any ordered restitution on the offense to be sealed must be paid in full. |
| Alcohol/drug-related offense |
The petitioner must demonstrate rehabilitation when required by the statute. |
| Lifetime petition limit |
Only two petitions may be granted under the general petition-sealing statute. |
| Manifest injustice |
The continued existence and possible dissemination of the record must cause or potentially cause manifest injustice. |
Court filing fee for sealing petitions: Virginia’s current sealing law provides no court filing fee or court cost for either petition sealing or automatic-petition sealing. Other expenses can still occur for criminal-history records, notarization or service.
How to file a Loudoun sealing petition
Search every case first
Identify the exact charge, offense date, disposition and case number.
Determine whether the record should seal automatically
Do not file an unnecessary petition before checking automatic eligibility.
Include the warrant, summons or indictment when reasonably available
When unavailable, the petition must explain why.
File in Loudoun Circuit Court when the Loudoun case concluded there or the statute directs filing there
Virginia’s petition process uses the Circuit Court in the locality where the charge or conviction concluded.
Request that VSP send the Virginia and national history to the court
The new sealing process requires this criminal-history step; ordinary fingerprinting is not required merely to have the record sent for the petition.
Provide the petition to the Commonwealth’s Attorney
Follow the current service procedure. Mailing or hand delivery can avoid some private service costs.
Watch for a hearing or written decision
Virginia law allows some sealing petitions to be decided without a hearing when statutory conditions are satisfied.
Keep the sealing order
Save a secure copy for future background-check disputes.
Traditional expungement is still separate
Virginia State Police continues to describe traditional expungement under Virginia Code §19.2-392.2 for qualifying cases ending in dispositions such as not guilty, dismissal, nolle prosequi or certain pardons. The current Circuit Court form is CC-1473.
