These rules apply to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Adult Detention Center at 940 New Salem Highway. The Correctional Work Center is a different facility with different visitation rules.

What happens to commissary money after release?

RCSO currently gives released inmates one year to pick up a remaining commissary balance, which is converted to a check or debit card and placed in the Visitation Lobby. After one year, unclaimed money goes to the State’s unclaimed-funds account.
A pending commissary order must be picked up within five business days after release. After that, the items are donated.

Conviction-based expungement

Certain Tennessee convictions can qualify under separate rules. Current Tennessee court/TBI guidance lists a $180 expungement fee plus applicable court fees/costs for qualifying conviction-based expungements, but eligibility statutes have been amended repeatedly. Confirm the current offense eligibility and total with the Rutherford County Clerk and District Attorney before paying.
2026 Tennessee change involving a prior DUI Effective July 1, 2026, Tennessee created a limited path allowing an otherwise eligible later offense to be considered for expungement despite one prior DUI conviction when statutory conditions are met. Among the conditions are timing of at least 10 years after the DUI conviction, completion of the sentence for the offense being expunged, no prior conviction expungement and no more than one DUI conviction.
