Never rely on a name or mugshot alone. Match multiple independent identifiers before publishing an allegation, sending money or using the record for an important decision.
Why a recent Salt Lake County arrest may be missing
Booking is still underway
Salt Lake County states that booking averages about six to eight hours from arrival and can take longer if the person cannot immediately be processed.
The person was cited or released
A court case can exist even when no current jail entry remains.
The arrest happened in another county
Search the jail where physical booking occurred.
A city police department made the arrest
The detailed police report may belong to Salt Lake City, West Valley, Sandy, Murray or another local agency even if the person entered county jail.
The name differs
Search a maiden name, former surname, alias, suffix or alternate spelling.
The person transferred to Utah Corrections
Use the UDC search after state-custody or probation/parole supervision begins.
The public roster omits identifying details
Utah privacy requirements cause some public jail identifiers to be removed.
The record is expunged or otherwise restricted
Expunged court cases do not appear in Xchange.

Justice courts handle most class B misdemeanors, class C misdemeanors, infractions and ordinance violations.
Salt Lake County contains many separate municipal justice courts. Do not assume that a Salt Lake County Jail prisoner automatically has a case in the Salt Lake County Justice Court.

Effective April 1, 2026: Salt Lake County again welcomes walk-in personal visits. Prescheduled visits are still encouraged and receive priority.

Do not discuss confidential defense strategy on ordinary jail communications. The Sheriff’s rules state that calls to an attorney are treated differently from ordinary monitored or recorded calls.

Salt Lake County states that up to 50% of new money deposited into a prisoner’s jail account may be applied to balances the prisoner owes the jail.

Check automatic expungement before starting a petition
Major January 1, 2026 change: Utah no longer requires the former request form for automatic expungement. The court now identifies qualifying cases through its automatic process.

Utah Courts says the automatic process can take up to 120 days. Automatic eligibility has additional offense, debt, case-status and criminal-history requirements.

Utah Courts says certified copies of the granted order should be requested no more than 28 days after the order is granted.

Confirm that the government records were processed as ordered.
Traffic cases: qualifying traffic expungements go directly through the court and do not require the standard BCI certificate process. Qualifying cannabis-expungement requests can also have a direct-court route.
