Which Alameda County record answers your question?

SHERIFF LOCATOR Is the person in county custody?

Search the PFN or first and last name, then review custody and release information.

Best starting point for a recent Alameda County booking.
ARRESTING AGENCY What did officers report?

Request the arrest report, incident report or releasable supplements from the agency that created them.

The jail is not automatically the police-report custodian.
SUPERIOR COURT What charges were actually filed?

Use the criminal portal for case information and the Criminal Record Request system for copies.

This is where you verify disposition.
PUBLIC DEFENDER Does the defendant need counsel?

Alameda County Public Defender offices serve qualifying defendants at the county’s criminal courthouses.

Call the office connected to the courthouse.
CALIFORNIA DOJ What appears on my state history?

Request your own fingerprint-supported California criminal history for review and correction.

It is not a public third-party name search.
Most reliable workflow: Locate the booking → save the PFN → identify the arresting agency → obtain the report only if needed → search the criminal case → find the final disposition.

How to search Alameda County jail bookings

Open the official Inmate Locator Use the Alameda County Sheriff database rather than a private people-search site. Run the live Alameda County inmate search
Use the PFN when you already know it PFN is the fastest way to isolate one incarcerated person.
Otherwise enter both first and last name The live search requires both names when PFN is not used.
Use phonetic search when spelling is uncertain Check the option indicating that you are unsure about the spelling of the first or last name.
Add date of birth when needed DOB helps separate people with common or similar names.
Complete human verification The Sheriff requires the verification step before accessing the result.
Open the matching custody entry Compare name, DOB, sex, PFN and arrest details.
Save the PFN immediately You may need it for visitation, mail, the Public Defender and jail concerns.
Check current status Look for active custody, pending release or another displayed custody status.
Continue to Superior Court Use the criminal case system to determine what charges were formally filed.
Alameda County warns that custody information can change as an arrested person moves through the judicial process. Treat the live Sheriff result as a current custody snapshot rather than the final criminal case history.
Important identifier

What the Alameda County PFN is used for

Inmate search

Entering the PFN can locate the person without relying on name spelling.

Visitation

Santa Rita Jail requires the inmate’s name, PFN and date of birth when making a reservation.

Mail

The 2026 non-privileged mail process requires the incarcerated person’s name and PFN.

Attorney contact

The Public Defender asks callers to leave the PFN when known.

Jail concern

The Sheriff Ombudsperson asks for the incarcerated person’s name and PFN.

Identity verification

PFN is stronger than relying on a name or photograph alone.

Save it once: After finding the correct person, copy the PFN into your notes alongside the booking date, case number and arresting agency.
Custody result decoder

What Alameda County jail fields actually tell you

Booking data should always be compared with the court case

Booking information The jail intake connected to a custody event. Every booking charge became a prosecution charge. Search Superior Court.
Arresting agency The law-enforcement agency associated with the arrest. The Sheriff created the incident report. Request the report from that agency.
Charge An allegation associated with arrest or booking. Guilt or the final filed count. Compare with the court complaint.

Pending Release Administrative release processing has begun. The person has physically left custody. Wait for final status and check for holds.
Court information A court connection for the custody event. Every later order or disposition. Open the criminal case portal.

Date of birth matches
PFN matches another official record
Arrest date matches the known event

The spelling is different Enable the Sheriff’s phonetic-search option and retry.
You have only a partial name The official locator requires PFN or both first and last name.
The person was arrested by another jurisdiction Search the county or city where the arrest actually occurred.
The person was cited or released Not every police contact results in continued Santa Rita Jail custody.
The Sheriff is legally withholding the name ACSO states that certain booked persons may not appear because of disclosure exemptions.
The person was transferred Check state prison, federal custody or another county when transfer is possible.
The record is sealed or restricted Juvenile, sealed and otherwise confidential records may not be publicly available.
Missing-custody call script

What “Pending Release” means at Santa Rita Jail

Pending Release does not mean the person is already outside the jail. Alameda County states that the administrative release process can take several hours.
Confirm the PFN Make sure you are looking at the correct incarcerated person.
Check the newest custody status Refresh the official locator rather than relying on a screenshot.
Do not assume release is guaranteed Another legal holding authority found during processing can stop the release.
Wait for final status before traveling Do not assume a specific pickup time from the Pending Release label.
Check the court order The criminal docket explains the release decision and future appearances.
Scam warning: Alameda County Sheriff warns that deputies will not call, text or email demanding money for early release, a warrant, a missed court appearance or an electronic ankle monitor.
